Five O's Open 2016 With Run Rule Win Over North Lake

By Dan Flaherty | 5/1/2016
It was more than Opening Day on Sunday at Roosevelt Field. It was also the managerial return of Steve Rhoads, taking on the role for the first time since 1998. And most importantly it was the battle for "The Rock", the red-white-and-blue painted rock that Oconomowoc and North Lake play for possession of, making this a rivalry on par with Alabama-Auburn. It added up to a media circus at Roosevelt akin to the atmosphere of the old carnival days when LOL play opened.

The Five-O's did not disappoint, with a 15-1 rout. It was the first opening day win for Oconomowoc since 2012 and the first time they have been on the good side of a run rule since 2013. Before the first inning was out they had scored eight runs. They took advantage of five walks and four wild pitches, and Derek Nelsons hit to center was the big blow. It would be more than enough for Jordan Murray, who coasted through five innings with 65 pitches and kept North Lake off the scoreboard.

And Oconomowoc was far from done offensively. Luke Nelson cleared the bases with a double to left. Josh Bouche hit a three-run opposite field blast. Aaron Benz hit a dead-center home run. Leadoff hitter Chris Trafton drew three walks and was hit by a pitch in four plate appearances to set the table.

It made for an easy day and made it easy to look ahead to the 2016 season with confidence. The Five-O's have benefitted from some upheaval in the world of Oconomowoc baseball. The folding of the Oconomowoc Titans left quality players available like Trafton and Benz were in the starting lineup on Sunday. The Five-O's, already with one of the better veteran cores in the league, have gotten a needed infusion of fresh blood.

So the time to get your season ticket package is right now. Oconomowoc will be at home again on Sunday, May 8, against the Hartland Oilers. Game time is 1 PM.
